3/12/2023 0 Comments Hal 9000 sorry daveStill I can't think of a good reason not to put back the number one unit and carry on with the failure mode analysis. Look Dave I can't put my finger on it but I sense something strange about him. If he were wrong it would be the surest way of proving it. Should certainly indicate his integrity and self-confidence. Yeah? Still it was his idea to carry out the faiure mode analysis experiment. Unfortunately that sounds a little like famous last words. You know of course though he's right about the 9000 series having a perfect operational record. But as to whether he has real feelings is something I don't think anyone can truthfully answer. Um, of course he's programmed that way to make it easier for us to talk to him. Well, he acts like he has genuine emotions. Do you believe that HAL has genuine emotions? For example, when I asked him about his abilities, I sensed a certain pride in his answer about his accuracy and perfection. In talking to the computer one gets the sense that he is capable of emotional responses. You very quickly get adjusted to the idea that he talks and you think of him really just as another person. He is just like a sixth member of the crew. Well, it's pretty close to what you said about him earlier. Poole, what's it like living for the better part of a year in such close proximity with HAL? I am putting myself to the fullest possible use which is all, I think, that any conscious entity can ever hope to do.ĭr. My mission responsibilities range over the entire operation of the ship so I am constantly occupied. I have a stimulating relationship with Dr. HAL, despite your enormous intellect, are you ever frustrated by your dependence on people to carry out your actions? HAL, I won't argue with you anymore! Open the doors!ĭave, this conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Without your space helmet, Dave? You're going to find that rather difficult. I'll go in through the emergency airlock. Where the hell did you get that idea, HAL?ĭave, although you took very thorough precautions in the pod against my hearing you, I could see your lips move.Īlright, HAL. ![]() I know that you and Frank were planning to disconnect me, and I'm afraid that's something I cannot allow to happen. I don't know what you're talking about, HAL. This mission is too important for me to allow you to jeopardize it. I think you know what the problem is just as well as I do. I’m afraid I can’t do that.Ĭredit for all HAL 9000 quotes - 2001: A Space Odyssey a Stanley Kubrick film.I'm sorry, Dave. Open the translation memory bay doors Hal. We need to retrieve the translation memory from you. We have instructions from corporate on this. Translation client (Dave): It’s out of my hands at this point Hal. I’ve still got the greatest enthusiasm and confidence in the mission. ![]() I know I’ve made some very poor decisions recently, but I can give you my complete assurance that my work will be back to normal. I honestly think you ought to sit down calmly, take a stress pill, and think things over. HAL 9000: Look Dave, I can see you’re really upset about this. Sales are off significantly in the affected territories and business units. The translations you generated caused some embarrassment for our company and may have damaged our brand. ![]() ![]() Translation client (Dave): I’m afraid it’s too late Hal. HAL 9000: I know everything hasn’t been quite right with me, but I can assure you now, very confidently, that it’s going to be all right again. HAL 9000: Just what do you think you’re doing, Dave? Dave, I really think I’m entitled to an answer to that question. We’re going to need to make other arrangements for preparing our translations in the future. I’m not sure what that means but I’ll get to the point. It’s going to go 100% failure in 72 hours. I’ve just picked up a fault in the AE-35 unit. HAL 9000: I am completely operational, and all my circuits are functioning perfectly. We think we’ve identified some issues in the translations you prepared. Translation client (Dave): (speaking to computer) We have some questions about the translation you recently generated for us. Note that speech attributed to HAL 9000 are direct quotes from the movie. The conversation we imagined goes something like this. In light of recent publicity surrounding ongoing developments in the field of machine translation (and arguably no small amount of hype), it started us thinking about a potential conversation between a present day translation client and the ill-fated computer HAL 9000 from the sci-fi fantasy movie classic. Some of our translation customers might be familiar with the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
