Late-night screen time is one of the most common sleep hygiene violations. Computers, smartphones, televisions and tablets emit blue light, which can reset your circadian clock and make your body think that it is time to be awake. Quality screen time: Netflix, Hulu and a boatload of apps may entertain you but won’t help you fall asleep. Whenever you find yourself ready to nod off, stop what you’re doing and go to bed. Indulge in a low impact hobby: Do you play a musical instrument, knit or like to draw? All of these activities can be low impact and perfect for when you cannot sleep. But you can’t do anything that’s stimulating or in violation of the basic rules of sleep hygiene. The worst thing you can do when you can’t fall asleep is lie in bed and attempt to force yourself to sleep. This may be a little difficult to convince your boss, but a good 20-minute nap midday can really boost your energy levels and give you reset on productivity. Try snacking light and often, rather than larger meals. Eat a light lunch, anything to large or heavy is going to make you sleepy. Get in fruit & protein to start of your day. If lyrics tend to distract you in a high focus job, try listening to instrumental ambiance music. Something with a good, lively beat can keep you in a good mood and mentally pumped up. Set a timer, and every 30 minutes or so, take a few minutes to look away from the screen blink, multiple times, and look at something in the distance so your eye muscles can relax. your eyes get dehydrated and sore, causing you to be sleepy. When working at a computer, you often stare for long amounts of time without blinking, which is really bad. You may have to pee more often, but that also gets you up and walking. When it’s empty, fill it immediately so there’s always water. Then keep a bottle or cup at your desk, and you’ll naturally sip at it. If you start feeling sleepy, just down a whole bottle of water.
